From Diagnosis to Treatment
An Interdisciplinary Approach to Tongue-Thrust Swallowing
Tongue-thrust swallowing is a common phenomenon in clinical practice that often appears as a “symptom,” while in reality it indicates a disturbance in a complex functional system.
It affects:
- speech sound production
- the development of the dentition and jawbones
- breathing patterns
- posture
Yet we often treat these areas separately.
🔎 What does this mean in practice?
An incorrect swallowing pattern is not merely an articulation issue.
The position and movement of the tongue directly influence the production of speech sounds (sz, z, c, s, zs, cs), while also playing a role in the development of dental abnormalities and jawbone developmental disorders.
Experience shows that if the underlying functional abnormality is not identified and corrected, therapeutic results will not be lasting.
🎓 What does the professional development day offer?
The aim of the one-day training course titled “From Identification to Therapy” is for participants to:
- recognize the signs of tongue-thrust swallowing from various perspectives
- understand the functional relationships
- gain practical tools for diagnosis and therapy
- know when it is necessary to involve other specialists
🧰 Professional support
The professional development day is also supported by Savaria-Dent.
As part of this, we provide participants with practical tools tailored to their respective fields:
- a trainer for dentists and speech-language pathologists
- nasometer for physical therapists and respiratory therapists
This support helps ensure that the perspectives and knowledge gained during the training can be more easily applied in daily practice.
👥 Interdisciplinary Approach
Throughout the program, speech-language pathologists, orthodontists, and physical therapists jointly present the therapeutic process, supplemented by a respiratory therapy perspective.
The emphasis is on interpreting the functional system as a unified whole and on interprofessional collaboration.
🧪 Patient presentation – the key element of the day
During the professional day, we will also prepare case presentations that allow participants to follow the entire therapeutic process:
- recognition
- diagnosis
- decision points
- interdisciplinary collaboration
- therapeutic steps
This part is particularly important because participants do not receive isolated pieces of information, but rather gain a comprehensive view of a complex, real-world clinical process.
🧠 What will participants take away from the training?
After the training, participants will be able to:
- see the connections between swallowing, speech, breathing, and posture
- recognize underlying functional abnormalities
- make more informed decisions about therapeutic approaches
- collaborate more effectively with other professionals
