Neuro-Muscular Orthodontics
The role of disharmonious muscle function in various malocclusions and effective correction options

Why is it important to understand the role of muscles in cases of asymmetry? Are we really planning thoroughly if we don’t take this into account?

Unfortunately, we all have cases that recur, and we don’t really understand why—even though they seemed fine at the end.
Many of us are reluctant to tackle certain discrepancies, or avoid them altogether, because we don’t know of a solution that would allow us to achieve a truly effective, good, and stable result.

Most often, these are cases where there are visible asymmetrical discrepancies at the level of the dentition, the jawbone, and the face. The question is: in such cases, do we consider what muscle function asymmetries are present in our developing patients or in adults? Neuromuscular orthodontics (ONM) offers a perspective that takes into account not only dental and jawbone discrepancies but also asymmetries in muscle function and muscle strength.

ONM offers the opportunity to understand that this can indeed be reprogrammed, and it outlines the steps necessary to integrate this into daily practice at both the diagnostic and therapeutic levels. This makes it possible to resolve even cases that we have, let’s admit it, “struggled with” until now; in fact, in some cases, its application can even help us avoid surgery. In this way, we can create a more stable, better-functioning, beautiful smile for our patients, and our patients will not return with a problem but will recommend us.

Lecturer:

  • Dr. Romain de Papé - France

What is ONM?

  • The method is based on the adaptability of development and neuromuscular connections, using a multidisciplinary approach.

What will be discussed?

  • We will discuss diagnosis and gain an understanding of the role of muscle function during development. This provides a key to managing difficult cases, ensuring that prevention is truly effective.

How can it help?

  • It helps in understanding and effectively treating the causes of significant basal deviations and asymmetries in adolescence. It creates opportunities to correct jawbone abnormalities in adult patients, thereby making surgery less frequently necessary. A comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that views the patient as a whole and draws on the expertise of related discipline.

Why might this be relevant to your practice?

ONM is not just another device or accessory—it is a shift in diagnostic approach that reinterprets the etiology of malocclusions by building on the adaptability of neuromuscular connections. In many cases, this multidisciplinary protocol makes it possible to avoid orthognathic surgery and brings about measurable improvements in neuromuscular balance.

Over the course of two days, Dr. Romain de Papé will guide us through the diagnostic steps and decision trees to help us identify the appropriate therapeutic tools and protocols for each patient, and will use case studies to demonstrate the results that can be achieved in both children and adults using the ONM approach.

What will you be able to do differently after the course?

  • Recognize neuromuscular etiology where previously we only saw the malocclusion itself - EMG-based diagnostics in daily clinical practice
  • Incorporate dynamic evaluation of the occlusal plane into treatment planning, beyond static radiographic analysis
  • Differentiate cases by facial type - why the treatment logic differs between hyperdivergent and hypodivergent cases
  • Plan and fabricate re-programming bite splints - indications, biomechanical basis, and step-by-step laboratory communication
  • Demonstrate when surgery can be avoided - evidence-based decision tree for skeletal discrepancies in adults
  • Understand the neuromuscular causes of relapse - and show how to prevent it in the next case

Two-Day Topics:

The fundamental philosophy of neuro-muscular orthodontics (ONM)

  • Introduction to ONM
  • The foundations of ONM for understanding the etiology of malocclusions
  • The multidisciplinary approach

The foundations of ONM

  • The physiological basis of mastication
  • Radiological and clinical measurements in ONM
  • Understanding the occlusal plane in static and dynamic positions
  • The importance of facial types in terms of orofacial functions and clinical tools
  • Neuromuscular balance in electromyography

Treatments and clinical management in ONM

  • Decision Tree for Various Clinical Situations
  • Prescribing in ONM (Laboratory and Clinical Situations)
  • Tools in ONM
  • The importance of neuromuscular reprogramming splints
  • Clinical cases

The two-day program covers topics ranging from the fundamentals to clinical application:

  • The etiology of malocclusions from an ONM perspective - the relationship between masticatory muscle function and the development of occlusion
  • The importance of cephalometric and clinical measurements in ONM diagnostics; static and dynamic interpretation of the occlusal plane
  • Electromyography in daily practice - measuring and interpreting neuromuscular balance
  • Facial types and orofacial functions - differential diagnostic considerations and choice of instruments
  • Solutions for adolescent basal asymmetries and skeletal discrepancies - protocols to aid in treatment planning
  • Treatment of jaw abnormalities in adults with ONM - when can surgery be avoided?
  • Neuromuscular reprogramming bite-raising appliances - indications, planning, fabrication, and follow-up
  • Communication in ONM - laboratory instructions and clinical scenarios with real-case presentations

DR. ROMAIN DE PAPÉ

Dr. Romain de Papé – A New Dimension of the Functional Approach in Modern Orthodontics

  • Qualified Specialist in Dentofacial Orthopedics
  • Assistant Professor, University Hospital of Strasbourg
  • Member of the National and Eastern Regional Board of the Bioprogressive Ricketts Society (SBR)
  • Member of the Scientific Council of the French Federation of Orthodontists (FFO)
  • Manager of ONM Conseils
  • Founder of the ONM Masterclass (Neuromuscular Orthodontics)
  • President of CEPROF (Multidisciplinary Study Circle for Orofacial Rehabilitation)

Dr. Romain de Papé is a leading European figure in modern, function-oriented orthodontics and the founder and principal instructor of the Orthodontie Neuro-Musculaire (ONM) approach. Building on more than 15 years of clinical experience and multidisciplinary collaborations, he has developed a treatment philosophy that restores orthodontics to its true medical context: the restoration of function and balance.

During his career, he earned a specialty certification in dentofacial orthopedics (Paris 7) and subsequently expanded his university clinical experience in Strasbourg. His scientific and professional work is recognized by several prestigious organizations: he is a member of French and international professional bodies and a recipient of the Pierre Fauchard Academy award.

CEPROF (Cercle d’Études Pluridisciplinaires pour la Réhabilitation Oro-Faciale), which he founded, provides a unique professional platform for orthodontists, speech therapists, physical therapists, and maxillofacial specialists, where diagnosis and therapy are carried out through a truly interdisciplinary approach.

Dr. de Papé is credited with developing the ONM protocol, which is based on the integration of neuromuscular regulation, biomechanics, and functional occlusion. His approach focuses not only on aesthetic correction but also on the rehabilitation of the entire stomatognathic system, with particular attention to preserving periodontal and tissue integrity.

The Masterclass ONM® training system he created has already transformed the clinical approach of hundreds of orthodontists across Europe. The training provides comprehensive, immediately applicable knowledge, ranging from a rethinking of diagnostics to digital and hybrid treatment strategies.

Why should you attend his lecture?

Because Dr. de Papé doesn’t just teach technique—he imparts a mindset capable of rethinking treatment decisions and leading to more predictable, functionally stable results in the long term.
